Our Story

While volunteering as an SAT-prep teacher in 2012 in New York City, our founder, Tinia Pina, saw firsthand how limited healthy food options impacted her students' productivity, affecting their future. Gravitating towards the mission of boosting local food production, she founded Re-Nuble.

Today, we are committed to helping all growers make healthy, clean food more affordable and readily available—especially to those who normally couldn't afford it

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to fully saturate your mats?

A few seconds; just be sure to keep them horizontal and wet them evenly throughout.

How much moisture do your mats absorb?

Our mats are easier to wet. ReNu Terra mats have much higher total moisture retention while maintaining maximum moisture content in the safe range to prevent water stress. ReNu Terra mats have superior aeration and increase root zone volume, which supports healthy root systems. The ReNu Terra mat has a comparable Gravimetric Water Capacity to all except the coarse hemp mat and holds 12.9 times its dry weight in water.

Do your mats provide optimal conditions for new and mature roots?

Absolutely, roots love it already.

How thick are your mats?

YThe density of matrix is 0.5g/in3.

Are the mats reusable? If not, how should I dispose of them?

It is not advisable to reuse any type of microgreen mats. While ours do not degrade to a significant degree during usage, they do fill with roots, and this organic matter affects porosity and may also cause unwanted microbial growth that could hinder plant growth in subsequent growth cycles. ReNu Terra mats are best disposed of in a compost by laying them flat in one piece and covering them with compost. Another alternative is to shred them and mix them into your soil or potting mix.

What are they made of that makes them so sustainable?

Our blends include drought tolerate crop fibers (such as jute) as well as proprietary fibers made from sustainable sources. As such, they are efficient to produce, are not threatened by climate change, and have no negative impact on the environment.

Is there an ideal pH that should be maintained based on the media’s initial pH?

Staying close to a pH of 6 is advisable for most cultivated crop species, and this is simply to maximize nutrient availability. The range from pH 5.5 to 6.5 is acceptable.

What is the E.C. of the media?

A saturated media extract (SME) of our jute-based media yields an E.C. of 0.1 dS/m.

Are there any special considerations in terms of storage?

Temperature and relative humidity do not affect the product long term, however it is advisable to keep the product dry until you are ready to use it.

For what types of growing operations are your products best suited?

Our products are ideal for all soilless systems for leafy greens, fruiting crops, hops, cannabis and help. Please check each product page for additional details.

Do you guarantee sterility and provide certificates of conformity?

Yes, we perform thorough sterilization of all our products in our factories and then get 3rd party testing for each batch to certify this. When we are inoculating our products with beneficial microbes, they are no longer sterile but microbial tests will confirm species present.

Why are you doing this?

Making nutrient compounds from organic sources available to the plant in the same form and at the same rate as synthetic (inorganic) mineral salts is incredibly difficult. We've always held the belief and have at least seven years of research to support that long and complex protein chains can serve as a viable source of nitrogen for plants. In an unadulterated natural environment, this is how our living, biological ecosystems thrive.

We're doing this because if we need to increase food production by 2050 to meet the demand of the world's growing population (according to the UN), then we need to empower our communities with the ability to cost competitively grow organic (non-chemically laden food) with local, sterilized waste streams. We're using proteins and amino acids, amongst other compounds, from plants to increase the efficiency of minerals being available to the plant in order to reduce our dependence on synthetic (conventional) mineral salts.

There's still more work to be done to reach a product that is exclusively sourced from plants, but we're close.

Are your products organic and if not, why?

We're currently not organic certified as we are waiting for internal review for the certification process. However, we're confident that we’ll be able to get our products certified, making it easier for soil and hydroponic growers everywhere to grow certified organic food.

Do they work with aquaponics?

We haven't fully experimented with the Re-Nuble product in Aquaponics.

Is the food waste you use organic? If not, what’s the possibility that chemicals and pesticides used to grow that food affect the ‘organic’ nature of the solution?

We source unrecoverable, vegetative produce byproducts (waste) from wholesale produce distributors, manufacturers, and processors. This is because our manufacturing process involves pasteurization as well as accelerated, controlled processing that breaks down the compounds of any residue that may have existed (such as pesticides, herbicides, etc.).This is a great article that sheds more light on how decomposition/composting helps eradicate the existence of these chemical residues, if any.

ReNu Terra™ Mat

100% Plastic-Free

USDA Certified Biobased Product

If you have purchased 10”x20” mats, remove them from the packaging and lay them flat into your mesh bottom 1020 flats.
If you have purchased a roll of mats, unwind them from the roll and cut them to the desired size, then lay them flat into your grow trays or troughs.
Wet the mats by top watering until fully saturated using the shower setting on your sink or hose nozzle. This should take about 10 seconds, and you want to make sure that the entire mats look evenly wetted.
Place your 1020 flats into your irrigation system (preferably ebb-and-flow) and irrigate every 4 to 12 hours, depending on your preference and how dry the room is. For NFT systems, you may irrigate continuously or pulse irrigate at the same frequency that you would in an ebb-and-flow system.
For very dry environments (40% or less), irrigate every 4 hours. For very humid environments (80% or more), irrigate every 12 hours. Feel free to optimize your irrigation schedule based on your observations.
To harvest your microgreens, pull the mats out of the 1020 flats and lay them flat on a solid surface, then use garden scissors or electric shears to cut the microgreens about 1 inch (2.5 cm) from the mat(s). Place the microgreens in your storage container(s) and refrigerate until consumption.
